OK simple question I got a botia modesta given to me. And I now only have a single clown loaches. They are both about 3 inches. Instead of 4 of each. Could I get two of each and let them shoal together? Because the red finned loaches and clown loaches are always together now...

Modesta are generally more aggressive than clowns. If yours doesnt beat up on the clown, he may be ok with keeping them together, but other Modesta you add could be meaner. You can try a couple more of each and see what happens

it seems that it has to do with the school's makeup. If you have a school of clowns and only one or two Y.mods the Y. mods will calm down and sort of join in, but if you have a school of Y.mods and one or two clowns the clowns will go billy-bad-ass to try to keep up. Either way, they won't make one happy school. They have very different personalities and seem to speak different languages.
Try getting 3 or 4 more of each and see if they'll live their independent lives (needs BIG tank >100 or 150Gal), or give one away and concentrate on the other species... which also need >100Gal, sorry. Both species are big, active animals.

Modestas are really nasty - i put them in my 125g with my clowns and they were beating up on them. I returned the modestas. You can keep modestas with skunk botias and tiger loaches.

Agree with this. Botia modesta and tiger loaches can get mean. They do get large too, but very territorial. I've had both a while back and now just clowns, zebras and yoyos. IMO - Should not mix together. Should pick one or the other.

Everybody above are totally correct. The modestas are so great looking but they are mean and nasty. I put 5 in my 125 with my 20 CLs and they started nipping at them and leaving scars on them. Fortunately the Pet shop allowed me to return them. The only reason some people have success its because they lucked out because each one has different personalities. Modestas are good with Skunk botias and tiger botias which are in the syncrossus family.

Modesta usually pick a spot and stick with it. They simply will not allow anything in that area without resistance. Just my observation

I have now 26 clowns and 3 modesta; they share the same loach hole. I have not seen any aggression except every once in a while the modestas will fight amongst themselves.

All fish act differently. I ketp two big botias (about 5-6") with a pack of clown loaches ranging from 4-7". They all got along fine.
