The only botia listed on the IUCN Red List. Here's the listing:

Citation: IUCN 2008. 2008 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. <www.iucnredlist.org>.

These aren't too hard to find for aquarists. Anyone have any insight or comments on why they are listed in this category? Furthermore, are aquarists driving them to endangered status?

if their breeding habits indicated by similarity to other botine sp., then I think it could be very possible to see them being harvested faster than they reproduce.

I am looking for them thru the GCCA, and can get them for $15 each, but I thought that was pricey, now, this may change my thinking.....why, the question still stands....

Hmmmmmmmm.

Nuthman~

That is the cost with shipping? The issue also is weather here is inpredictable....

There's a possibility that they're being farm bred, but no efforts in captive breeding to restore wild populations. I've heard that Cherry Barbs are endangered to extinct in the wild, but we can still buy them for $2 because they're so easy for fish farms to breed them.

Benzjamin - I used to keep/breed cherry barbs just BECAUSE they were functionally extinct!

I've heard the sidthimunki are being commercially bred, and several reports on Loaches.com seem to back this up. The price has dropped precipitously lately, as well. Soon, I believe, it will no longer be cost-effective to harvest wild-caught munkis.

prices on sidthimunkis have not dropped in several years. only one report of sidthimunkis breeding in an aquarium has ever been posted. They are still considered near extinct and are on the RED list for fish imports.

Sorry Glostik. Too much caffeine and too little research.

I enjoys striata and kubotai more anyway :-(
