Not very good. Why not just buy a real biomedia? Something like Seachem Matrix would be ideal, it is not expensive, and you only have to buy it once. There are certain things you can cut corners on and there are certain things that must be done right or if done right make the tank easier to maintain and run better its whole life, don't cut corners with filtration.
