Bottom brace on a 180, necessary?

I just picked up a 6' x 2' x 2' glass aquarium. Glass is 1/2" - 5/8" thick. When moving it into my house we cracked the bottom frame as shown in the attached pic. No cracks in the glass or anything.

Just wondering how critical the bottom frame and cross braces are for the long term integrity of the tank.

I know that the cross braces up top are intended to prevent bowing, but wouldn't the entire bottom panel of glass essentially act in the same way?

I'm going to toss some silicone on it just in case, but wondering if the bottom cross braces are NEEDED or if they're just there because it's easier to use the same frame on top and on the bottom rather than manufacturing a separate style frame for the bottom.
