Hi all, its been almost two years since I have been on here. Have made some changes since than, got married, new house, had a daughter. Now I have been in the new house for just over a year and am wanting to set up a 220 I just bought. I am looking for suggestions on what kind of freshwater setup to go with. I am not sure what I want to do with it, whether it be a large community tank of more common fish or if I want to go with just a few big monsters. Lets hear about what your favorite setups you have had or have that you were most happy with to help me decide what to do. Thanks

Congratulations on the marriage and child, as far as the tank setup if i were you i'd go with a few monsters. I've never been much for small fish as the smallest fish I ever kept as the child were bluegills and sunfish, and even those got pretty big :P - I'm just now getting back in to it and have a small 10 gallon with an opaline gourami and rainbow shark (both juvenile) because my girlfriend likes smaller fish, but I miss having the bigger predators so i'm taking my 45 gallon back to my apartment (still not big enough for real monsters but it's an upgrade i can afford as a college student) - If I had a 100+ gallon at my disposal the one fish i'd like to have is a jaguar cichlid, with a 220 i'd get a jag and then figure out what would be safe in there with him, i'd love to have a pair of ornate bichirs and a jag but that's just me, will follow this post to see what you decide good luck

cichlid community? if so, get:

1 oscar
1 jag
1 midas
3 male convicts ( surving as dithers
3 firemouths
6 silver dollars ( or 8 depending )
add you 2 plecos from your 55 to the 220 to.

but thats what id do, just me of course lol. OH and some pictus catfish!

What is your budget?

I would love to help spend your money.

You should really think about a "community" of cichlids. To me..having a big tank for just 1 or 2 fish is boring.

I would do layers of Monsters. For example:

Top level: blue arowanas

Mid level: Wide bar Silver Dollars/Tiger Datnoids

Bottom level: Clown Loaches(always action)

Wait, this is what I am rocking now.:D

New world cichlids + clown loaches :D

I like firemouths for some reason but for a 220g you'll probably want some larger cichlids

^^^^ i like that plan
