well were new to the madagascarian cichlids, here's a couple a pics can u sex it for me?

it is about 9" has a chunk taken out of end of dorsal but im sure it will heal in no time.

Nice butti. I never tried to sex them. I just checked one of my books, "The Manual Of Tank Busters" by Gina Sanford and Richaard Crow. It didn't give any sexing info other than, "Unfortunately, there is no way of distinguishing males from females, either by colour, build or fin development."

Another quote from the book said, "This is probably one of the most belligerent African cichlids." I imagine you already knew that though. It seems to me one of my fish magazines has an article on breeding buttis, if I can find it I'll see if there is any sexing info in it.

ok so no-one actually knows how to sex them apart from venting??
 
ok, so how big do males get, how big do females get??
 
Oh hey i have buttis too but i've never really been able to tell male from female. Those are nice fishes you have. But also i noticed you mentioned "madagascarian"... Buttis are actually from West Africa. Madagascar cichlids (Malagasy cichlids) are any of the Ptychochromis, Paratilapia and Paretroplus..plus some lesser known species.
