I'm pretty surprised how much color the fish is showing, he was taking a pretty bad beating once he was introduced on monday. He's learning how to hide from the other fish now and finding a spot in the pecking order.

I bought him as a vieja melanurus but I know that young vieja are prone to mislabeling...someone correct me if this is wrong. Whatever species he is, he's a great fish. Very colorful, not overly aggressive, and he doesn't get scared by sudden movements outside of the tank (unlike some of his tankmates).

Melanurum is named for melanin, which produces black coloration.

Looks more synspilum to me, melanurum look like synspilum with a lot of extra black. But as said, these guys all look pretty similar when small so who knows!
