Also should say the protein skimmer was used briefly on a QT tank which worries me a bit

Vinegar if it's got a lot of coraline algae on it and a significant application of elbow grease?

Don’t use vinegar. May destroy the pump. Use citric acid. I don’t measure out an amount, just pour about 1/2-1 cup into a 5 gallon pail of water. Let skimmer soak and run overnight. It will come out spotless.

& should I be worried that it was used on QT tank? Besides cleaning as recommended above, maybe I should let it sit out in the sun so UV rays can sterilize?

The acid should kill anything on it. Saltwater parasites won’t survive the freshwater dip either

Acid will certainly kill anything. You can use bleach if worried. I’m doing a similar process on live rock that I got from one of the worst conditioned tanks I’ve seem

For me it was bleach, Muriatic acid, and now back in bleach.
