can anyone help me plz. my male aratus is hold some type of egg looks balls in his mouth. tha first time i seen this i thought tha males hold tha babies in their mouth. then no balls were in his mouth anymore. now i noticed that he is holding tha same looking balls again in his mouth. can anyone explain that or something

Your "He" is a she if she's holding. Only female mbuna hold eggs. If a female is new at holding she may spit or swallow the eggs early. It can take a few spawns for them to hold for full term.

no its a male. hes black wit tha wite ish yellow sripe. im pretty sure its a male and he has no rock in his mouth. they look like eggs. ill try to get a pic

Color is not an accurate way to tell gender. Males do not hold eggs only females do. Females can show male colors if they are high ranking or use it as a way to keep other fish away. I've had female white top haras take on full male coloring when holding(and other times, I just thought she was a male till I saw her holding).

wen i bought my aratus he/she was blk, wit and yellow. then as it got bigger tha dark colors started comin out. my aratus doesnt run tha tank but its like second in charge. so wut are tha chances that it can be a female and breed with another african cichlid than a aratus?

i really do apreciate the help everyone.

I have had female aratus with male coloring. So it could possible be a female.
They will cross breed with alot of other Africans as well.

well i hope its a she and she is holdin. that would means ill have cross breeds.thank you again for tha help

if my aratus is a female and is displaying male colors, and she is holding eggs how long will it take tha fry to come out of tha eggs? or however the fry develop

i agree that only females carry and color isnt the best way to call upon gender..if it is male it would most likely have rocks..
