I am currently a graduate student at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY, studying the mechanisms for locomotion employed by bowfin (Amia calva) as they swim, and we are in great need of more animals for our study, preferably of sizes ranging from 6 to 15 inches in length.

If you have any live bowfin to sell that can be shipped to our university in New York, or if you know of any other sources that we should contact, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. All expenses will be covered.

You may contact me via email at kevin.m.jagnandan@hofstra.edu. We hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,
Kevin

I catch these fish all the time, I'm pretty sure there legal to keep for research purposes. Let me know if you still need one.

There are rules and regulations about this.

I would dot my T's and cross my I's about 50 times before I even considered doing this.

Make sure that they cant be netted locally...which is the route we would go if this was being done at my university, in my lab.

Average people I am going to assume are not going to be able to sell you native fish, and shipping them across state lines is a whole other matter.

GL with this.

Thanks for your input. I will definitely look into this a little further.

I will continue to look into the legalities of this as mentioned by the other poster, but in the meantime, I do still need some. They would have to be between 7-14 inches in length if you catch them at that size.

Bio...feel free to PM me...Im just putting stuff out there but work in a university/with a lab and will help however I can.

Take a vaction to florida and we can go out and get as many bowfin as u want. Im working on getting the mew record for largest in florida and know some spots were we can get son 2-3 footers.

Come to New Orleans, lets face it way more fun than Florida. The bayou is only 20 mins away and we have more bowfin in the ditches then you can imagine. Here they call them Choupique which is a french word from cajun country, but the same thing that I used to catch in Michigan as a kid. Not to mention we can drink while we fish and it is perfectly legal here no matter where you are, it is the Big Easy after all.

Also if you want some 100lb catfish too there are plenty coming through the spillway now along with paddlefish which they are catching and throwing back into the Mississippi as fast as they can.
