Hello! I'm just wanting to get everyone's opinion on eventually putting my bowfin and bichir together. Right now they are both babies and in separate tanks. I wont be putting them together until they are about the same size as I've had my bowfin since February and my bichir I got a little over a week ago.

bichir I got a little over a week ago.

Never kept a Bowfin but have seen members with them with Bichir. I would keep them separate to make sure Bichir don't have any parasites or any other health related issues.

I would keep separate for atleast a month . Also what specie of Bichir do you have?

Polyaddict86 Polyaddict86 has both bichirs and a bowfin. He can give some advice. But size has to be close.

I've owned bowfins in the past, and one bichir (coincidentally, an ornate). They lived together in a community of large fish and never paid any attention to each other or anybody else too big to eat.

Bowfins may look like snakeheads but they are pussycats by comparison. Voracious eaters, yes, but not aggressive to non-food targets.

That has been my experience and observation of them as well.

I am very skeptical of this in the long run. Bowfin get big and they have a big mouth. The Florida record is 19lbs. If size is similar it will work for a while, but fishing for them they have taken some pretty big baits. I agree on the aggression I don't think they will be bullies, but eating a tankmate is not out of the question.
