I just have to share the funniest Bowfin experience I have had to date. Me and my best buddy were pounding a few brew and shooting the breeze by my indoor Bowfin aquarium. The mini-monster kept banging the glass all excited (Like he was asking for a beer) and opening his mouth wide for show. A few minutes ago as my buddy was leaving, he stopped at the outdoor deck pond (My Gar-den). He was remarking how much my longnose Gar has grown... I pointed out the smaller of the two Bowfin (~9" - 10"). He was uber-impressed, and decided to stick his finger through the netting cover to let the Bowfin smell him. In less then a second, his finger was down the Bowfins throat to the first knuckle. He screamed as he removed his finger from the pond. I almost pee'd myself laughing. I have heard that Bowfin do NOT have teeth like the Snakehead, but it was able to draw blood from a finger of a construction worker like it was a bloodworm.:headbang2 He said that petting my Gars is now a thing of the past since these two monsters are in there.

bowfins be mean...beware!

OMG, is that a skull of a Bowfin? I don't know where I was lead to believe that they were toothless! That is one heck of a set of dentures.

I almost always feed my babies by hand! Perhaps it is time to rethink a new strategy! I lied, I will hand feed them until they devour my hand!

lol bowfins may look like they got no teeths. but those are just grips teeth i think. their true teeth are pretty much hidden. i remember them snatching my crappies right in half with out a problem.

Man I'm jealous. I had a bowfin for about a week and it jumped out. Funny story though that's why I got it in the first place was the TEETH lol.

They have teeth...but not anywhere near snakehead teeth. Guy was an idiot to put his finger in the tank. Fish was obviously hungry...its used to having food put in by humans...and he puts in ONE FINGER. He deserved that. I wouldnt stop hand feeding him if he was my fish...then again, I didnt stop hand-feeding my lionfish even after he started following me around the tank. (Dangerous to have a venomous fish follow you around ALL the time especially at times when you are not expecting him to be right behind your arm...exe water changes.) :D
