im thinkin bout settin up a native type tank:headbang2 . and im real interested in bowfin, they look like some mean mofos. im interested in the basic info of the bowfin and how fast they grow. so anyone willin to chime in?

thanks

Had one for about 7 months and it grew to about 8". It lived with my LMB which was maybe 4" and I am going to say right now most people don't get as lucky as I do and not having problems. Mine eventually jumped out. I wouldn't get one unless you had a huge tank. Mine was in a 55 and it seemed too small for him. He would hit the sides all the time when he was swimming fast.

I would shoot for at least a 125, with plans to possibly upgrade. I would also plan for it to ultimately be a single fish tank. Above 8-10 inches, Bowfin are quite unpredictable. They are "biters". Any fish getting too close to a bowfin is likely to get siezed. They will grab other fish even if they have no intention of eating them.

i am getting possibly ether a 48"x30"X30" or 48"X48"X24".. would that hold it for life?

I don't think a 48" tank will do for a fish that can grow over 24".

u could get quite some time out of him in that tank. i have one thats in my 220 for about 9 mos now and hes in with a tiger shovel nose, arow, pbass, 1 clown ,1 royal ,1 gar ,1 black line pike and a motoro ray. he has been no problems so far. in fact he is the least aggressive fish in my tank execpt for the ray. my buddy has had one for almost 2 yrs and its only 11 inches. heres mine.:)

Bowfins arent actully that mean, you can keep them in a native tank no problem just make sure nothing can fit in its mouth.
