has any one herd or own a bowfin (Amia calva) it caught my eye and i was wondering. it gets 20 inch and members of this family has fossils 180 million years old

Heard of them. Had them. They can get considerably larger than 20". Some have been caught over 40". The Amia does go back to the lower jurassic and hasn't changed much since. Fossils show the bowfin as evolving air-breathing organs for survival in oxygen-poor waters. The present day bowfin retains that same capability.
This is a cool-water North American version of a snakehead.

ah i see just not as illegal as snake heads so if legal they are just a practical snake head replacement

Unfortunately, they're on the no-no list for CA. Along with most every other kind of fish.

BTW, that bit about permits is a joke. CA doesn't issue permits to non-institutions or non-commercial hatcheries.

ya i know of the list im just mentioning it because where they are legal in the US u should get these insted of the snake head
and also most of the fish on that list are sold and i own alot of fish off the list to
