yeah, don't get one unless you plan to keep it, undoubtabley they get 2'+ long, they are also not a snakehead, and if you plan to get on and then realese it back into the wild when it outgrows your tank, then don't, keeping it in captiveity for a while, it may lose it's instincts for the hunt, being that it is automaticlly brought food everyday, then as it is realsesed back, it will die for not being able to to find food., also i believe that it is illegal to collect. native speices of fish from different states, though it may be different if it is above a certain size. if you decide to keep one in captivity, have a tank with a 8'x30" footprint< minimum prepared.

i had a cute little bowfin, and he was hungry, and ate my 8" african aros eye out, so i fed him to Mr JAridni!!
OH hellz no!!!!
Mess with my AFRO!

XR, not to sound like a prick, but i shoot bowfin all summer with bow and arrow, and i dont really give two %&*$# about state law. they die when i shoot em and they may die when i release them from my tank, oh well. they're a beautiful ancient fish (i know they're not snakeheads, when did i say they were?) but in my area they are a problem. when fishing the lillies, we'll see bowfin as often as bass, it's really annoying. just wanted some info on their upkeep and their character in the tank.

you sorta implied you though they were snakeheads when you posted this topic in the snakehead forum., but anyways if you want to keep them, no body's stopping you.

its not the fact that they lose "instinct for the hunt" when released. its the fact that they can harbor harmful pathogens they picked up while in the aquarium. thats not good for the environment. :(

i've had 4 or so around 18-22 " they were fun to watch and got along well with other fish

Some of the girls are :screwy:
