what could i use for substrate for a pair of eastern box turtles? i dont want to use leaves from outside, and im not big on moss, what else would be good and look decendt???

Why? They're perfectly capable of living outdoors all year long where you live. My EBT's have been outdoors for 20+ years without any issues. They're native where you live which means they've evolved to cope with extreme weather and temperatures of your part of the country.

because we have really bad thunderstorms practically everyday. last year, a thunder storm knocked a tree branch on one of my pins and tore down the wall. all except 1 of my turtles were gone.

and i dont trust my pins. i had my three legged box turtle escape last month because my big female dug a hole under it. i found her in the middl of the yard.

I think you mean "pen". And if you build them correctly they won't escape. I've never had one escape in all the years I've kept box turtles.

Here's a build thread on my current box turtle pen. It might give you a better idea on how to construct one.
