depends i dont like giving my fh food with hormones and that sounds like it does

there are lots of color enhancing foods. i am going to spell this wrong but, astaxithin is a natural color enhancer for improving reds. it is in krill and shrimp. all good color enhancing foods have it and it makes a huge difference. genes do make a difference, but even colorful flowerhorns can be better with good food. it will make all your cichlids more colorful

Yep, what MTS said. Any food with "astaxithin" (I don't know how to spell it either) will enhance color. Technically, tetra color enhancing flake would probably do the trick too. You also want to be looking at the protein and fat content of the food. I prefer 40-45% protein and ~10% fat.

how about live food does that help with color or just make them grow bigand fast

If the LFS guys means this pellets (check the link that I share) then I would say "HELL YEAH" but I warn you about the pearls and if your fish still try to develop his head better not to feed them with this coz it will block it. FYI I have an exp in the past when one of my friend flowerhorn died and we want study the cause of the death by autopsing the fish, and when I saw the color of that fish intestines then I was so stunned by the deep and strong red color on it since that fish being feed it by haifeng fast color as his mainly food. But the fish didn't died because consuming this pellet because of swim bladder. Hopefully this will help and GBU
