Is Brachyplatystoma Filamentosum the largest catfish, other than the endangered chinese catfish? Are there any out there for sale, or is it also protected?

It is really not that easy to say which catfish species is the largest one. The two giant asian Pangasianodon are surely the heaviest, reaching weights of around 300 kg in exceptional cases. The confirmed record length for the wels is with 2,78m similar to the longest confirmed length of the Pangasianodons. Brachyplatystoma don´t grow as long as the wels, but it is nearly equal if it comes to weight, because it is stockier and bulkier than the wels, which has a maximum confirmed weight of 144 kg and B. filamentosum of 142kg. Such small differences in weight don´t really count if you keep in mind how this dates can change from eating alone.

As far as I remember this giant Pangasianodon gigas caught some time ago was 2,7m or so, what would be still a little bit shorter than the 2,78m for the record wels. But in any case, the giant Pangasianodon species are the heaviest.

It's subjective really. Wells holds length max recorded, Mekong (Pangasius Gigas) holds weight by far 644.5lbs and about 9ft that one I think, and Piraiba falls somewhere in between. I'd say on average there are probably more large Piraiba's than Wells and definately than Mekongs. This is based on the fact that local people consider Piraiba babys (Filhotes) at 100lbs still and about 4-5ft. Although not confirmed I'd also place Piraiba as 2nd place in weight reports of 400lb Piraibas back in the day and I've seen pics of unweighed ones that would appear to be at least 250-300. ~Trent
