Hey everyone. I have questions in this thread. I am keeping fish from the family Brachyplatystoma for the first time, and from reading other threads I assume that others have the same problem. I've noticed that both fish that I own(flash zebra, and piraiba) are very picky and from day one would only take live fish. When I first got them they were very sickly and I did not want to starve them. After two weeks of eating nothing I broke down and got them guppies. They were only 2", and 3" at this point. I also got a jau with them. So anyway after fattening them and getting them to around 6" I decided it was time to ween them. So I started starving them. After a month they were again sickly and refused to even look at shrimp, fresh fish, bloodworms, or anything else I would put in the tank. The jau on the other hand took a liking to shrimp, and fresh fish. He outgrew them 3to1. So he's in a seperate tank now. My concern is that I had to start feeding them minnows again for fear they would die. I could see their ribs, and their backs were sunken in. So now I have them to 10" and I am trying again to ween them, and I have decided to stick it out til either they die or get off live food. Anything you guys have done with fish from this family to get them off live food? Feeding them the crappy feeders from around here has given them numerous illness, but I have been able to save them everytime. I'm just sick of them being sick and would like to get them on to healthier foods. I just need to know any tricks of the trade. I've weened many, rtc, tsn, hybrids, native cats, ect, but these two take the cake, and imo seem unweenable! Please post up your expiriences for me and everyone else to learn from!:D Don't worry I won't let my fish die, if need be I'll get some more feeders, but for the next couple of months til they look like they are dying again they get nothing but whatever I am trying to feed them.:screwy:

The one I had only took guppies the first week but after that I didn't want to deal with it anymore, so I put some beefheart cubes in there at night and they ate them pretty good. It took them a few days though. Then they ate bloodworms, tilapia fillets, shrimp and all that good stuff.
Are they the only two in the tank? Sometimes my fish did better if another fish was in the tank with them that ate that stuff.
If they still only do feeders why don't you set up a spare tank and get a whole bunch of feeders and make sure they are all healthy and fatten them up pretty good before you feed them to the two.
I'm sorry I couldn't really be of much more help. Good Luck. I'm sure it will work out

I just put them in with my limas so maybe there is hope after all. The limas eat blood worms and shrimp. Hopefully they'll see the limas eating shrimp and get the idea. Thanks. Still curious to hear what everyone has done.

Hmmmmmm this is a tricky question whenI had my tigrinus all he would eat was live I have never been a huge fan of starving to get them to eat something else! I find what works is like what you do when you want to switch your dog onto a new food start at 10% of ne to 90%f old and kep putting in less of the old to more new! now with live feeders I would cut the number down and add a little of the new food at the same time! Also when I feed feeders I would buy the feeders 2 weeks in advance and treat them with pariste meds and feed them an awsome diet some thing like what lizzard keepers do to cricket it called gut loading because what you give to the feeder you are giving to the catfish! anyways if the feeders showed any signs of sickness they get fed to my snapping turtle! There are times when some fish will not eat anything but live and that is a price we have to pay to have these fish! you deff are very lucky to have those cats we deff have nothing evan close to that here and the only reason I had my tigrinus I got him through a manager at a petstore who got it through a wholesales who could not sell this fish! He died in the move and I was almost in tears he was deff an amazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing cat!I would trade my whole collection to have that fish back! the last time I saw one for sale it was under 6 inchs and they wanted :screwy:$600.00:screwy: Canadian for it!

I've tried putting in food while the feeders were in there. they just ignore it totally. They don't even taste anything besides feeders. It's like they are oblivious to it all. Someone mentioned something about garlic before. Not sure though. Trying to get to the bottom of this. So pleco, how long did it take for your fish to start eating stuff besides feeders and what size were they?

So some good news in my quest to get rid of feeders in my tanks.

I decided about month and a half ago to take my fila out and put him into his own tank. he was getting beaten up pretty bad by the jur, and refused to eat even feeders. So anyway he's much healthier and fatter now. I removed all feeders from the lima tank with the jur. Now today I threw some shrimp in for the limas and one fell in front of the jur. He scooped it up and after about two mins with it in his mouth he swallowed it. :) My plan is to now not put any more feeders in with the fila and see how long it takes me to persuade him to eat something besides feeders. So now I can fatten up the now skinny jur. The fila btw has grown 3" in the past month while healing up. He's eaten about 200 feeders in that time frame as well. I'd love to be able to post on here next month and say he's off live for good as well!

Thats great necro... personally I have been lucky enough that none of my fish have ever been much of a problem with converting so I have no gaurenteed to work tricks, I'm personally the type that won't even break down to get them guppies as I'll actually "force feed" before they get to skinny. I've noticed that once they get the taste of shrimp or beefheart it's no longer an issue. Have you tried all the usual tricks? Garlic extract and such? I don't know how you "prepare" your shrimp for feedings but when you thaw them use the least amount of water as possible if your doing it in water ( as I do usually, I mean who has time to let 5 pounds of shrimp thaw out during the day LOL My wife would be pissed to always have shrimp sitting around :grinyes:)

the other possibilty which might help you is getting sardines, I have 1 TSN which will only eat them if they are Sinking... will NOT Touch it if it gets to the bottom of the tank... (Thanks for the Picky TSN HighTimZ  ) the way they sink I guess can make it seem like the sardine is alive for the split second it takes for your fish to eat it... you should have no problem finding small ones in the supermarket and they are really cheap... although not the best quality food it's not far off...and you can always load them with some vitamins and or shrimp or blood worms or what ever you want if you can get them eating them. If your lucky enough you should have your choice of head on or off as well... Never hurts to get the head on if your trying to "fool" your fish... Maybe if you still have some feeder Guppies you could test it out by freezing them and seeing if your able to fool your Fila

Could be a bunch of bad ideas but then again... it's worked for me in the past... not sure if it was pure luck though or not...but it's worth a try :D

This fila is so picky he'd rather die than even put an eye on anything not live. Garlic does nothing for him. He has to chase the fish for about 5 mins before he'll eat them usually.

So an update. There's not been any feeders in the fila's tank for about 5 days now. I decided that his belly looked sunken in enough last night to give it the first try again starting with bloodworms and shrimp. He didn't take the bloodworms or the shrimp so I cleaned them out. I noticed before I went to bed that he was swimming around pretty actively and decided to try again. I threw in some shrimp and waited, but nothing so I left them in there. This morning when I woke up I looked in the tank trying to find the shrimp to scoop them out, and what? no shrimp. Now he's the only fish in the tank, and I was shocked!!! So I broke up some more and threw them in, and he didn't bat an eye. One of the pieces started rolling in the current and he chased it and ate it. Not very ferocious, but just gingerly picked it up and swallowed it. He then proceded to the other piece and slowly gulped it down also. So 5 days without fish and he's on shrimp! Kinda makes all that frustration from the last try worth while now! 3 months the last time and nothing, 5 days this time and it's as if I didn't try at all. Oh well, but now all of my catfish are off live and I'm living happy!!! Even my new marble ate bloodworms, and shrimp about 10 mins out of the bag.
