How big do these guys get? I've heard anywhere from 3" to 1'. I'd love to keep one in my 55 gal West African tank, but if it gets bigger than 8" I'll have to let go of the idea

IMHO, there is no reason at all not to trust PCF on this: http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=780 7" max standard length (SL), that is not counting the caudal fin.

I kept a few of these in the eighties, very rarely seen these days, mine never grew larger than 6". There is a very similar species is Hemisynodontis membranaceus, this species has larger maxillary barbels feathered at the ends and grows to 12" plus, these also spend long periods upside down.
