So i have a 75 gallon fish tank, and i am about to give away the last resident. My Pacu. What I want to do is setup a brackish paludarium with mudskippers and archer fish, and other brackish species. So here is a list of some questions I have.

  • What do i use to make the land mass?
  • What, if any, reptiles and amphibians could also go in a 75 gallon brackish paludarium with or without the mudskippers?
  • How long would you estimate this project to take with live plants and do it not sloppily?
Thank you all in advance.

Lots of paludarium build threads here: http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/paludariums/

Also check out some of Hydrophyte's riparium threads on this forum. I bet mudskippers would be quite happy with just emergent mangroves and driftwood to sit on instead of built-up "land" area.

There are not a lot of brackish water herps in the trade; diamond-back terrapins and file snakes spring to mind, but they are not really appropriate for the setup you describe. Very few amphibians can tolerate brackish water. How do you feel about crabs?

I can't help with the time estimate. It depends on how elaborate a setup you want and how handy you are. Building up land area can take a while; the riparium will probably be probably much faster.

Not a lot of brackish amphibians to choose from! If you're setting up the tank because you want mudskippers, just do a species tank for them. Mangroves are your best bet plant wise but very slow growing! If on the other hand, you're just after a paludarium, freshwater would be best for your options :)

Best,
Paul
