I just set up a small 2 gal. brackish tank (1.008 SG) in an attempt to breed olive nerite snails. I was hoping to put a small plant in there that will survive in the brackish water and LED light that comes with the Fluval Nano set up. Will any of the anubias work? If not, what will?

Anubias might work if you acclimated it slowly to brackish. I don't know how the growth rate would be affected, they are slow growers as it is. Some other options are java ferns, crypts, and java moss. Java ferns are the most common plants done in brackish water, but again, any of these would need to be slowly acclimated to the salinity. .

You'll be hard pressed to get plants to grow at that salinity.

Also, I don't believe nerites can be bred in the aquarium. Something about difficulty in providing the required food source for the free-swimming hatchlings. I have a brakcish tank that is always littered with nerite eggs. I've never seen a babe, nor heard of anyone else being successful.

Also they are voracious eaters, I don't know if you will have enough surface area for algaie growth to support many of the snails, and I've never seen mine sample anything else in the tank.

Sorry to be Captain Bringdown.

Good luck with your tank. There's plenty of brackish fun to be had there.

I think they'd like to breed in Java moss.

I don't mean to hijack, but thank you for posting that! I love my brackish tank...except for the complete lack of success with plants in it. My FW tanks all have healthy, growing plants. Anything in my brackish is washed out and thin. I sort of figured out it was going to be tough to get anything to look good...and now you just confirmed it. Now I don't feel so bad lol :)

I've read that nerites only breed in Brackish, and the babies have to be practically full marine when they are first hatched. But it's been really hard to find any hard information on it online.
