This is my first brackish aquarium, right now I have a Green Spot Puffer in a 10 gallon (I do have a 35 gallon to upgrade him to when he goes marine)

He has about 1/10 marine strength water at the moment (he was 100% fresh at purchase) once a week, I will add a gallon of marine strength water. At which point will the salt content be high enough to put live rock in?

Also, any tips on where I could find an affordable, easy to use SG gauge?

Can I use argonite with him now, or should I wait until his water is more marine-brackish instead of fresh-brackish?

Thanks in advance for any advice....plus any tips or tricks I need to know?

Green Spotted Puffer
You can purchase a hydrometer fairly cheaply at most LFS but make sure it starts at 1.000. SeaTest & Instant Ocean make them. Online, try www.drsfostersmith.com or www.bigalsonline.com.

I was advised to the link by a woman I've been talking to since purchase, so I've read it before (at least 4-5 times to make sure I got it all ^_^) It's very well written and informative.

Are either of those the hydrometer that sticks to the inside of the tank? If so, how well do those work?

He's maybe JUST 2 inches, and the 35 gallon tank will need to be drained and cleaned a bit before he can go in (I have goldfish in there now)

I already know to scoop him in a container, and move him with water, since the dangers of puffing out of water.

He's very active, and a pleasure to watch. He's a chubby fella who has most, if not all, of his fins intact.

Is there a SG that liverock needs to be at?

I was also going to try your trick for hermit crabs, do I put the shells in now? Or wait until I have the crabs?

I wouldnt add live rock to any system that wasnt fully marine, or very very close. One benefit is that you could go ahead and setup your 35G as a marine system and let your live rock cure and go threw its phases of "growing back" after being shipped and moved and such.

I do not suggest putting a 2" GSP into SW. We aren't sure of the long-term effects of keeping a juvie in SW.

I am not aware of any hydrometer that sticks to the inside of the tank. Aragonite is good to use for him now.

What size should he go into SW at? And how long should it take him to reach that length? I only have a 10 gallon available until his other tank is emptied.

But I could put him in his 35 now, with the same SG as the tank he's in, and slowly keep upping the salt content. I could ISO the live rock in my 10, until it gets going. OR, I could do as was suggested, grow him until he's big enough for SW, and cycle and cure the 35 as marine, then just transfer him when he's ready to go.

Which would be better?

I would put him in the 35g now & raise the SG according to that article.

Alrighty, Thanks!! ^_^

yeah don't put live rock in water unless it is at .020 or you will get die out in you tank the rock I put my tank that was live was killed, and dried out (then cleaned off cause my daugter decided to feed my fish milk a few years ago so I dried and rinsed it off then put the dead rock in my tank and cycle with 100 molly for 1 month just to make sure befor I out my new fish
