How important is a bio wheel filter set up for brackish water or can I just use my XP3's or would 2 FX5's be better?

I currently have a canister filter (700gph?) with a sponge over the intake, in the filter I have ceramic peices for the first chamber, carbon for the second and floss for the third. In the tank I also have two powerheads with sponges over the intake.
Should I consider anything else? At what salinity should I consider using a protein skimmer? Would I need one?
