Hi. I am setting up a new tank and changing my old 80 gallon to brackish. I am looking for suggestions, but have a few fish in mind already. I am not sure if they are compatible, but from what I have read they may be.
Plenty of hiding spots
1/2 sand sub, 1/2 light colored coarse gravel sub

Snowflake moray or reedfish/ropefish
Toadfish
numerous puffers

If the Toadfish and puffers are no go, then perhaps sand dabs.
Whacha think?

Which puffers? I like to think that all those fish could get along if they had no need to bully the other fish. IE puffers have a good diet where they won't need to fin nip; eel have adequate food and hiding space.

Try it but have an emergency plan just in case. My 10 gallon is always ready to rescue a fish.

Ropefish are not naturally a brackish species. Are there people keeping them in brackish water?

Your right. I read something in the past that mentioned ropefish were brackish. I just looked it up and in the Congo there are small sections of slightly brackish. Probably not a good idea then.. I will stick with the moray. I just wanted to make sure the moray did not attack the puffers, or visa versa.

I have a 9 inch toadfish and a 16 inch snowflake moray-(gymnothorax tile) in my 55 gal, they get along perfectly - always kinda cuddling together except during feeding time. Your toad fish will eat literally anything that gets in front of him, my losses so far include 3 angelfish, 2 platies, a glassfish, african frog and a fiddler crap. yup he's a monster. And for tank mates I had two 8 inch needle nose gar. I thought they were big enough not to be snacks. I was wrong they lasted about a month. I got to watch the eel finish off the 2nd one - was a great show little gut put up a nice fight. Was thinking of mono sabaes next? or i think scats would be good if you can find them large enough. moral of story- puffers will just make a nice snack

ummmm how did you have all those fish in brackish just does not compute

Didnt start off as brackish- started to convert when i found(and had to had to HAD to have) the g.tile and toadfish - then slowly built up salinity, the freshwater guys didnt last long enough to notice i guess(snacks)- so i didnt feel bad - frog and crab did great for about 2 and a hald months till they were eaten.

A snacked-on puffer can kill its killer as well. One of my co-workers decided to put a tiny green-spotted puffer in my salamander tank; I found a dead sally with a huge lump in its throat the next day.

Thats what I am fearing the most. Especially losing a snowflake to a puffer as a bad meal would be terrible.
I do not want to sacrifice their loss by any means, especially if I think it is going bad, I would have to drive to San Jose I think, would be the closest store to adopt a brackish fish. Tany, good call, I think ill get a 20 long to store under as a brackish refuge. As far as tankmates I have a lot of reading to do.
Perhaps if I then do a toadfish, snowflake, and if I can acquire something like a larger pignose puffer?
I have a 10 gallon breeding, trying to breed frogs for food, but not going well so far.
