Hi all, im moving my Green Spotted Puffer from my 20 gallon brackish tank, to my newly aquired 55 gallon so that he can stretch his ah..fins =) so my question is: Do I have to take an special precautions to putting him into his new salt water home? Will he be alright going straight into salt? Obviously i will let the tank cycle and setup for about a week. And ill let him set in a bag for the temp adjust...just being careful and making sure i dont kill him some how...im new to salt water.

Also what are some good combonations as far as puffers that can co exist..? Also a good place to order online?

How do you plan on cycling the tank in 1 week? What SG is he in now? How big is he? Why not save some $alt & raise the SG slowly to SW?

Your puffer is going to need to acclimate to the SG changes, and slowly. You're going to need to be patient. An example of impatient would be planning to cycle your tank in one week. I recommend raising the SG gradually, about .001/week. Doing so will aid your puffer in getting used to the higher sailinity. This method is also crucial because the BB for BW is different than the BB in SW, so it will help to gradually introduce the SW BB while the BW BB slowly dies off.

I agree about fast SG changes effecting the biological bacteria but if he cycles the tank as a SW tank to begin with, the puffer can be acclimated--granted it is already in high-end BW. Otherwise, since the process should be no faster than a drip-acclimation of raising the SG .001 (.002 at the fastest) per hour, this process would be too stressful on the fish.

I will wait as long as i need to, to cycle my tank...lol im not tryin to rush anything i just dont know much about salt water....which is why im asking =) i have setup the tank with 5 gallons of premixed water from the LFS and have put in salt that will treat 50 gallons...i have some live sand, though not much only about 6lbs just enough to cover the bottom for now..no rocks or coral yet...any info is going to help me here..im researching as much as i can!

I did this long ago, with green spotted puffers and I raised the salinity a small amount every day for two weeks till my brackish tank was the same salinity as my sw tank. They reacted find to the small increases in salinity, I also ran cycle as I increased the salinity to make sure I would keep as much biological filter as possible thought out the process.

They didn't seem stressed at all, and you know puffers they will let you know when they are stressed.

So keep an eye on your fish and they will let you know how they are liking the transition, if they do seem stressed then give them some time to adjust and raise the salinity by a smaller amount the next time.

GSPs + most corals = no corals. You might be able to try mushrooms, zoanthids & leathers or none at all.

Yeah, your puffer wil llove picking at all the life that comes out of it.

I have a 5 year old GSP that I converted to full salt 5 or 6 months back when I moved. He started out in fresh. Then brackish, then salt. I basically just added a tablespoon of dissolved salt to the tank ever day until I got the right salinity when I needed to convert him from brack to Salt. He's happy as a clam now.
And corals are iffy lol. He's eaten a but ton of corals. Right now I have polips, shrooms, sponge, enename and a yellow branch looking coral with red feather dusters that come out at night. I forget the name of it. But he's ok with those.
