This is question for brits or (treeologists???) I want some thin long branches to put in my cichlid tank to give it a more amazon feel, but don't want to put in anything that can damage or poison the inhabitants. Any ideas of native trees I can use ?
I think any type of hard wood should be ok. Some people say to boil the wood, however boiling the wood softens it which in turn forces air out and makes it easily waterlogged. The downside to this method is you could be helping it rot faster by softening it up. The other method of sterilizing it is to place it in the oven at around 180 C or slightly higher for 2 to 3 hours. It will take longer to waterlog but your hardening the wood slightly. Putting the wood in another tank with some "test" fish is advisable. Good luck mate!
When ever I find something that I want in my tank, I usually just put it in there. It is my belief that filtration and water changes can reduce any uncomfort to my fish. And given that in the wild they probable incounter much worse things than they will ever encounter in my tank, i feel that they are fine. I guess I should also mention that I have never lost a fish due to adding decorations.
