im brand new to breeding ive had fish lay eggs and ive had little fry. unfortunately none made it. I was under the impression that there are things you can do to accelerate the proccess. How do you get fish to breed in the first place? then how do you keep them from eating them? is it safe to move the eggs? i feel so uneducated...:(

first off, welcome to mfk.
you are asking a question that is far too broad. not all fish even lay eggs, and even egg laying fish have many different breeding habits/requirements.
what is it that you are trying to breed? and what is the filtration, PH, water parameters?

well i was hoping to breed cichlids i hadnt quite decided which particular one yet, there are so many great cichlids. Should i have it figured down to the specie before i inquire?i was most trying to gather information. PH is round 8. filtration is a power filter.

Found this online. What do you think?
  1. <LI itxtvisited="1">Step 1
The first thing you need to do is make sure that the cichlids you have in your tank are all of the same temperament. You don't want to buy an aggressive fish like a (Red Devil Cichlid) and put him in with your peaceful fish like an (Electric Yellow). Fish wont breed under stress!!
    <LI itxtvisited="1">Step 2
Maintain a clean and healthy habitat by doing a 10 percent water change at least once a week. This is very important.
    <LI itxtvisited="1">Step 3
Regulate the temperature at a steady 78 degrees F to encourage breeding.
    <LI itxtvisited="1">Step 4
Maintain the pH level of the water for the breed of cichlid you have. Some cichlids do well with tap water. Check your breed.
  2. Step 5
Make sure the cichlids have room to swim around and places to hide when they feel threatened... Scroll down for a helpfull tip... And good luck.
  3. Tips & Warnings: When you make the 10 percent water change, wait an hour or two then fill the tank up with slightly warmer water. The cichlids will think that it has rained ( noise from water falling from the filter ) along with a warm rain shower.. This triggers breeding.

Depends on the fish i think, but since it is your first time breeding i would suggest convicts. I am looking for a pair so i would buy 2 off u :D and The parents are VERY protective of there fry and actually take care of them unlike my old mollies that gave birth in the middle of the night and ate the babies by morning. :(

try reading thru this
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=261426

It covers some of the best fish for beginners in breeding.

I would suggest you start with convicts first and when you get that mastered then move on to more challenging breeds.

If you have any questions after that just ask in etheir thread.
