I didn't see it at the store, but now that it's in my tank I see a gray halo around the first ray of the dorsal fin. Should I just give it a day or two and see if better water conditions improve it? It looks bacterial, but IDK.

Get the pics of that area and then give it a day or two to see if it progresses or fades.

What are the water parameters currently?

Sounds like a plan. I'll get a picture tonight. Water parameters are not going to show anything because it is a fresh setup. I'm going to seed it tonight and keep up on water changes. That's how I usually do quarantine. Hasn't caused a problem that I know of.

Also, I found a report on their gut contents and habitat.

"Hemiancistrus subviridis were most frequently encountered in cracks and interstitial spaces of granitic rocks in flow. Gut contents of all individuals consisted largely of small grained (<0.001 mm diameter) mineral/organic matrix resembling clay, with some larger (~1.0 mm diameter) grains resembling silica sand. Organic material embedded in matrix of one individual (AUM 39283) included pieces of a moss-like nonvascular plant (Bryophyta), intact mayfly larvae (Ephemeroptera), midge larvae (Chironomidae), unidentified fly larvae (Diptera), a clump of filamentous algae, a piece of lignified vascular plant, and an ingested tooth of presumed endogenous origin. Organic components of diet in AUM 42140 consisted of unidentifiable pieces of insect exoskeleton, pieces of unidentifiable plant matter, and ingested teeth of presumed endogenous origin (n=2). The only identifiable organic components in anterior gut of AUM 42124 were ingested teeth of presumed endogenous origin (n=13)."

Does this indicate that I should keep granite in his tank? I think I should. And feed much in the way of larvae. Algae takes care of itself, but i will also add veggies.

Never followed up on this because the next day, the gray was gone. He looks good and poops wood. I gave him filamentous green hair algae in big clumps, but they are still there. I guess I'll wait and see what he likes to eat. I had to do a 90% water change because his water smelled nasty after the second day. So I added more filtration and even more live culture from other filters. Oddly, he did not eat the live worms I gave him. He's probably still getting used to things, or recovering from the rotten water episode.

Update. He's doing well in the 125 with some sunfish and the Oscar. Eats zucchini and brown algae so far.

hmm.. never heard of the granite thing before, but of all the slate rock, driftwood and other decor in my tank, he hides in the one single granite piece. Maybe there is something to this? He's 6".
