My beautiful new 12'' Buettekoferi died this weekend. Two days before, I noticed her choking on something and trying to cough something up. When she died (belly up is the worst way to find your bichirs! :( ) she was bloated and her stomach full of red lines, and was in the middle of passing something bloody. I chocked it up to ingestion of substrate - I had originally planned on putting cichlids in that tank. I know it's my fault completely. I removed all the bichirs from the tank, and bought 60 lbs of black sand. I'm not looking forward to rinsing it and setting it up, but I don't have a choice.

Ordered two 12'' Buettekoferi from Toyin to be delivered this week... only thing cheering me up.

sorry bro...

what size tank was it in??? dux you lost him.........i got one from toyin that size too

lost a del recently too, i know it sucks, sorry man, and congrats on the new fish

She was 12'' - picked her up from an LFS last month. Had her all alone in a 55 gallon. I spent all night getting the tank ready for the new ones... Filled a (clean) big trashcan with the water I had in the tank and got rid of all of that substrate, put in fresh black sand, rinsed the BeJesus out of it and then put the old water back in plus a bit of fresh for a water change. Put the plants back in... now all it needs is the fish.

I have all of them named... the babiest pair of Sens are Pinky and the Brain, the next size up are Gumby and Pokey, the next size up are Lil Guy and Lil Boy (Lil Boy used to be Lil Girl til I figured out how to sex them), the ornates are Eleanor and Angel, the Dels Cyclops and Jamie, and the lone lap is Lucy.

So... I gotta ask... when they're big... and they go belly up...how do you dispose of the body??? I had the hardest time figuring that out.

well if you have a yard, try the old '6 feet under', but in this case a foot will do, (not unless you have a dog who loves digging) but whatever you do don't try flushing it down the toilet, it will mess up your plumbing. =) just trying to cheer you up

not meaning to change the subject. but where did you get 60lbs of black sand, I am having lots of trouble finding any,
