breading plecos

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are about 300 species of pleco, each with its own set of needs. Which ones were you hoping to breed?

I would love to know about this also. Not sure of the breed of pleco but they are common petstore kind

i think u need a pond if not bigger to breed these.....rarely been breed i think...

Depends on what you want to breed.
I want to breed zebra plecos(L46), I can do that in a 40 gallon.
I also want to breed goldie plecos(L14) too which I will need a bigger tank for(120gallon long).
Depends on what sub-species really.
Just remember you need alot of current for plecos to feel at home and caves to take a break from the current and to lay eggs in.
The 40 gallon will have a 500 GPH filter or powerhead and the 120 will have about 1500GPH. It's not necessary but thats how I'm doing it:D.

common plecos are very very very difficult to breed, there is only one case ive heard on mfk and ac that someone bred them in there tank. with that in mind it really isnt worth breeding commons. IF you want an easy non expensive pleco to breed start with bristlenose, they are easy and can be bred in as little as a 20g long tank. :)

If u want to breed.. i would suggest try MFK vendor Snookn21 on aquabid.. he is currently selling breeding pairs of Pleco, the exotic kind.. not commons..

Its tough to breed plecos because often times u can't sex them until adulthood.. even then its very hard to breed because plecos natural environment are hard to replicate... till this day.. there is only one video on Youtube that show u a glimpse of Plecos in the wild.. and those are just common plecos..

Exotics are a lot different.. most are cave layers.... I have seen people breed bristle nose pleco a lot easier..
Breed exotics is hard because they dont necessay get along with their opposite sex.. or its own kind.. due to territorial reasons..

Hello,I am new here. The hypostomus pleco(common) can get to big for most tanks and to breed would require a pond or really big tank.I think starting with some bristlenose plecos would be a good start. They come in all differant types and most are easy to breed.Heres a pic of the common pleco spawn.

You have a Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus. Which is nearly the same as a Pterygoplichthys pardalis. They get confusing as they are hard to tell apart.

Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus:

Pterygoplichthys pardalis:

As already stated, hard to bred.

Usually dipped in a mixture of crushed bread, egg, and flour ... errrr, you mean breed?

Commons lay eggs in tunnels dug into mud banks. It's unheard of in a glass cage ... though maybe not impossible?

Bristle-nose are easy, so start there.
