Most people that i know with halides will run them 6 hours a day depending on stock. If its strictly SPS then the normal 8 hour cycle is fine. You dont really need to break in the bulbs but if you want, 2 hours day 1, 4 hours day 3, and 6 hours day 5, you get the picture. Otherwise the most common way is to run the halides your normal lenght, and use wooden dowels placed width wise on top of the tank, with screen mesh. you stack that about 3-4 thick, and remove a layer every other day. This is acclimating your corals, which you dont want to shock either.
IMO its important to have actinics or whatever form of supplemental light your using, come on an hour or two before the halides. This gives the coral time to wake up stretch and do what ever, until they main light is on. After your time, halides will shut off, and your actinics or what have you, will stay on another hour or two. Get the idea??
