I was just wondering if anyone here has succesfully bred endlicheri? I currently have three at around 13" ( and two lil babies ).

I have 2 males and 1 female, and a good mate of mine has 1 male and 1 female...at around the same size...( total of 3m & 2f )

We are hoping that we can eventually get a few breeding pairs out of our bunch as over here in Australia, each endli will sell from $250-$400!!! :nilly:

Just hoping someone can share some tips...(other than what is in the stickies)

cheers,
e.:D

I've seen breeding pairs of endli's and I think i saw a pic of a pair with a couple baby endli's.
I've never bred them myself, but I know they have to be old. (like 4 years maybe) Since yours are only 13", I think it will be some time until they're ready to breed.
Do a google search, I'm sure you'll find something about breeding poly's.
Or ask beblondie, she knows a ton about poly's.

yeh, i figured it would be quite a while away... but thought i would use this time to gather info...hehe

yes, im hoping beblondie or anyone for that matter might have some good info for me... but doesnt look like it...LoL :(

Hello,

i've watched courtship after partial water change with COLD water! Yes, you have read it the right way: cold water!
It seems that the cold water (with different chemical as physical attributes such as conductibility) simulates a heavy rain during the rainy season. This "trick" is adapted by a forum member in Germany who bred Senegalus and Ornatipinnis several times (unfortunately the larvae didn't make it).
My Senegalus are expressively sexual active after this water changes ... but Senegalus uses to feed their own eggs. The only possibility to avoid this is a massive planting in the tank. It seems also to me that massive planting is not only a "wellness-factor" to polypterids (they will go to ALL areas in the tank, also the surface!), since my planting is grown that way i will see more courtship too ...
My pair of Polypterus polli seems to be more season-orientated in courtship.

Another way to stimulate courtship and breeding is to lower the conductibility of the tank water. The easiest way is to bring in some destillated water. If you have the possibility lower the water level in the tank to simulate the dry season. After this you can bring in the destillated water ... instant dry-/rain season!

In Japan Polypterids will breeded with a little help from hormons - the exact working-out of this "therapy" is a well kept secret and ... a matter of taste.

Greetings

Uwe

the hormone is no big secret
Naturaly occuring hormones
Gonadotropic hormones (GtH) have been isolated in varying degrees of purity from the pituitary glands of several teleost fishes including some cultivated species such as common carp,Cyprinus carpio, chinook salmon,Heteropneustes fossilis,
Acipenser stellatus,to name some natural sources.
The piscine gonadotropins are glycoprotein in nature. The amino acid composition of gonadotropins from carp, sturgeon,
rainbow trout and others shows a broad similarity to the mammalian luteinizing hormone. The gonadotropins from carp, sturgeon and trout are each composed of two subunits, the alpha and beta chains; the amino acid and carbohydrate compositions,
Where it comes from and how it works.
Below the brain of a fish is a gland called the pituitary, which controls the spawning of fish. It is removed, crushed in distilled water and injected into the fish muscle to stimulate the fish to spawn.
