Hello, I am trying to set up a breeder tank for my Oscars. A guy at the fish store told me that it would be better to breed convicts than rosy minnows or goldfish because the warm water fish can give oscars hole in the head. Is this accurate? Also, he basically said all I need to do to get them to breed is crank up the temp a couple degrees and make sure I have flat stones in the tank. I have several river rocks in the 20g tank and the two convicts are in there by themselves. They are really small maybe 1 1/2" so I am wondering how long before I can expect to see anything? Also, he said that once they hatch, I should feed them frozen brine shrimp. Is this a good plan? What if anything should I change?
Thanks

Convicts will breed easy for you. Most fry do best on live food at 1st like freshly hatched brine shrimp. Although you could probably get by with frozen as convicts are good parents n they probably chew it up for them at 1st. Rosies n gold fish will not breed so easy!GL

Convicts will probably breed at that size. They start breeding while their small if you have a pair that is! Females will probably be a lil bigger n they'll have more pink on their bellies or up by their gills more than males. Males might not have any pink at all. Its been 15years since I bred convicts for food. The amount n size of the convict babies in my opinion isn't worth breeding them for food. You'll see what I'm talking about. Oscars are pigs they'll run through those convicts in days n you'll be left waiting for another month or so for more babies!
