Hi i am looking for information on how to breed discus i have a 85 gallon aquarium that ive had setup for about a month getting the ph levels and stuff just right for if i do decide to get some 2.5 inch discus which i probably will do how do i go about breeding them also im buying six and from different dealers to increase my chance of having a pair.

There is a professional breeder of Discus here in san francisco.........He has breeding Discus successfully since the late 60's...........Here is how his breeding tanks looks:

20-40g tall tanks........

One Brick standing in the middle for the pair to lay eggs.......

Small HOB filter, accompanied with an airstone.............

Bare tank, means no substrate on the floor..........

Temperature ranges between 78-82 degrees...........

As you can read from these quick notes, a large tank is not needed...........Simpler the better...Anything larger than a 30g can, and should, be used as a growout tank for young fry when they grow to fish shape(usually within 8-10 weks.........)The fish eat mucus off the oparents body, but baby brine shrimp seems to be a favorite when raising fry to fish.............

thanks that's some good info so if i get some small ones like 3 inches than i will grow them out in my big tank and then when they pair off ill put them in the special breeding tank thanks again

Youre better off getting a proven pair of discus locally if you can find a breeder.... your six 2.5-3 inch will cost you just as much as a proven pair and take you over a year to get them to breeder size... I say take the short cut, buy a nice pair for about 250.00-300 get even a cheaper pair if you can find them... and start breeding... just do your research first...and know your quick fix guide on these fishes.... I bred discus for about 4 years or so...had tons of frys, sold a few, gave tons of them away... remember everyone wants discus...no one wants to buy them... dont believe me...ask your local fish store about the amount of request for certain strains of discus....and once they get that strain in...everyone walks by them wowing them until their color fades, or one lucky person picks them up.....just from my experience....
