So I was walking through a shop (as one does) and I happened upon a flowerhorn. He was in a tank with some other fish, but he seemed apathetic, so I asked what was up with him. The shopkeep told me he was blind in both eyes, but that if I wanted him, I could use him for breeding (80$ for a 6” magma flowerhorn). He’s a beautiful specimen, and I’ve been wondering if it’s actually possible to get a blind fish to breed? It doesn’t seem very likely, but I thought I’d ask. Unfortunately, I have no images of the guy.

As long as he’s fertile I think it would be possible but I’m not completely sure. If you have the space and time I’d say give it a shot

Never breed a fish with any kind of health problem. His blindness or a propensity to blindness may be genetic. Only breed good examples of animals.

Ah, right… I completely forgot to consider that. Upon closer inspection, his eyes are glassy, like there wasn’t anything in ‘em. I’m going to guess that means it’s more he was born with it than he lost his vision? I’ll ask the shopkeep how he lost his vision. The flowerhorn’s not a bad specimen as it were, so I may consider just buying him as an individual fish.

One of my srd is blind in one eye, I got him and he was bli d in both eyes and swimming upside down. Been able to treat him and now he swims proper and only one good eye. He did breed with one of my parrots but he doesn't seem to fertilize all the eggs. Very low amount of fry. Average 10-20 from each batch. I think breeding one that may be blind due to genetics is not good. I believe ones that have been mistreated and nurses back to health may have a better success with good fry.
