i just got my hands on 2 30gallon tanks and was kicking around the idea of doing a single species of africans in each, with the hopes of breeding. now i know the tanks are small but was wondering if it was possible and if so which species would work best. thanx

Labidochromis are easy to breed. i'd suggest keeping a 10g tank for the fry if you're not using them as feeders. go heavy on the rocks with plenty of hiding spots/caves. generally acceptable ratio is 1 male to 3 or 4 females. there are many flavors of Labidochromis, but the one most often found is caeruleus (yellow lab). lime stone works well to keep the ph at a higher level, as well as some pieces you can find have small inlets where a female can hide from the aggressive male during mating. it's very cool to see, i highly recommend starting with that particular species. also, no need for plants in your setup.

You could choose a breeding pair or group of almost any regular sized africans, I would go with a pair of compressiceps or maybe calvus. Good luck

I have a friend who keeps his breeder peacocks and lethrinops in standard 30 gallon tanks. Most of them would be fine, just avoid any jacobfreibergi or really large lethrinops (lethrinus and other Protomelas-looking guys). Jakes get a little rough and will need a 40 breeder or a 55 as adults.

Go with a ratio of 1M/3-4F or 2M/4-5F if you want more than one male.

you should try a peacock mines breed in a 30 but you would have to keep it 1M 4F but the only thing is that the male is going to be chasing the females all over
