I've been looking around and apparently cichlids breed quickly? I have 8 small africans in my tank right now and was wondering if this was true...somewhere I read it was like life on mars, just add water and it'll happen. If so how long do I have before I am overwhelmed do you think? I don't know what kind of fish I have, just some out of the "assorted" african tank, all 3-5 inches and I was told they'd only get to be 5-7 inches...

Well theres well over 150 african species that reach the 4-8" range. Show us some pictures and we'll tell you what they are. I assume you have peacocks and some various yellow labs, electric blues, blue dolphins etc.

Not all cichlids spawn quickly, Frontosa's need to be 3-4 YEARS old.

What you heard about adding water and they'll spawn is completely incorrect. Some species need specific needs and habitats in which to breed. Others will do it at the drop of a hat. But do more research before you throw together a mix of fish and hope to have it all working out in the long run.

I have figured out that I have 2 electric yellows, 2 electric blues, a powder blue, an electric blue johanni, and 2 orange blotched zebra cichlids. I can't find the camera, if I do I'll throw some pics up.

I'm actually NOT wanting them to breed like rabbits, but if they do I guess it'd be alright (it's always nice to have an excuse to get a bigger tank!)

Also, I've been told that you can put Bichir in with the africans, is that true, and if so, how big of a tank do they require? (I am aware they get HUGE, I was just wondering about bioload, as I have read that cichlids have larger bioloads than say a large tropical fish.)
