I'm not sure of the scientific name, but I see black mystery and golden inca snails sold for pretty cheap. How long do I need to wait until they are mature, or are they usually mature right when I buy them? Do they breed easily? Should I buy them from different stores? They'll be in a 10g without any fish.

lol snails will breed like crazy... just add a bunch to your tank and boom you have more snails lol.

Do you guys know approximately how long I will need to wait? What's a safe number to get to ensure both males and females? :D

4-5 months of age with a size approximately 2 inches for Pomacea diffusa and Pomacea canaliculata. Be sure you know their sexes. Males in general are horny and can damage the female snails by injuring their mantle from constant copulation.

Check these threads/blogs. I have plenty more sticky threads in FW Invertebrates section so please take the time to visit there as well.

Freezekougra, if you want quality Pomacea diffusa, please visit Aquariacentral.com and PM msjinkzd, jackiomy, Bethany1619, dixienut or any other members there who keep diffusas. Their snails are of better quality than the chain stores and you are guaranteed they will survive for a long time. Store chain snails last only a few weeks or even days. As for canas, get them within your state. It is illegal to ship them around especially from outside the state. Any attempts to get them illegally is futile and the USDA will make sure to trace your location, confiscate the illegal specimens and throw them in an incinerator.

It is very easy to generalize the snails as one. Fenton is correct. Not all snails are hermaphrodites. All snails of the Ampullaridae and Neritidae are sexual, not asexual.

6 is usually the magic # when starting a breeding project of most any species. You want a tank that is only filled 3/4 way for some species that lay eggs above the waterline.

Hmm...I was thinking of keeping it simple by just getting snails from a LFS(only see apple snails around here). Maybe I'll try one of those "free MTS if you pay shipping" topics if I buy online:D
