Breeding Aratus Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok thanks. One more question. I feed mines a balanced diet of waffers and bine shrimp. 2-3 times a day. How long do u think it'll take before they reach that size? Are the slow growers?

how often do you do water changes? also mbuna are a mouthbrooder. meaning since you only have 2, breeding them might casue some aggression on the holding female. make sure she has plently of space and room to hide. she will do this the whole time she is holding, rarely even eating if at all. with it only being one female, the male will constantly harrass her, even when she is holding. what size is this tank you keep them in? depending on the size. you might want to pick up a few more females.

I have 4 females and 1 male in a 75 gallon tank with 4 ahil cichlids 1 male and 3 females. Does anyone know the breeding habbits of ahils? I know they get much larger then the arutrs. I aslo have a 32 gallon which I haven't did anything with yet I think Im going to breed a different smaller type of cichlid in there. And I have two 10 gallon tanks which I plan to put the mama arutrs in there once the put the fry in their mouths. Anymore tips anyone else can offer me Im open and willing to listen and learn. Them people at wal-mart and petsmart don't know nothing about fish.

cool.

reason i said water changes, is because i wasn't sure on the tank size. and all fish love clean water.

ahli will breed much like the mbuna. mother will still mouthbrood. i don't think there is a certain breeding size in either of these species. how big are these fish as we speak? imo a 75 should be good for 2males and 7females. maybe even raise ur temp to 80 - 82.

when i did breed mbuna and haps. few things i would do to spark baby makin. do like 30-50%water change one week, then feed a few different frozen, also i would add some rift trace elements. but other then those 3 things, they would breed purty regularly. i'd say you could skip the trace elements if neeed be. just my exp. well hope this helps. and gl with the colony. :)

if they are 1 1/2in they should get there in about 5 months or so, also they aren't slow grower either. You should feed them cichlid pellets instead of waffers, it grows them out faster.:)
