I'm curious to see if anyone on this site has breed Bala's either on purpose or on accident? Lately I've been seeing 2 of my Bala's perform the supposed "spawning dance" or whatever, but they are too small to produce anything. I'm hopeful for the future :headbang2. What's your experience if you have had success with this?

never had any spark with bala's breeding, curious to see what happens tho, keep us posted

it's gonna take some time. The two that "dance" together are both around 5 inches, Bala's don't become sexually mature till they are 9 inches.

But if I ever do have success, you guys will be the first to know!

Balas are, at times, aggressive with each other. I have 2 large (10-12 inch) ones that go at each other all the time. My small ones are starting to as well. I don't think what you are seeing is "mating behaviour" but more likely good old fashioned aggressivness.

Some sites state that Balas can be bred in the home aquarium. I have never heard of it happening thou.

I was doing some research after I posted this and I think it may have been aggressiveness too. The timing when I saw it kinda suggests it was too. They were being attacked by a psycho oscar and it probably got them started too.

But I'm gonna keep hope, maybe one day in the future I can be one of the first :D

My Balas have been showig that behaviour for the last 3 years. I even posted about it just like you are thinking it could be a breeding behaviour.

I'm not saying I think their going to, its just maybe one day I'll get lucky lol, may not even involve the same Bala's I have now lol.

To my knowledge balas have never been breed by hobbies, no one knows how to tell male from female, and know one knows how they actually breed. They are breed commercially in very large bodies of water. All of my bala's do that dance, especial when feeding.

Yeah I'm not expecting them to breed at all. Maybe one day, but its just a dream lol. Maybe when I'm older I'll get a pond and fill it up with them and see what happens :)
