Either then the typical biting on the lower disc what are some other things that rays do to express subtle interest in each other?

I notice biting around the eyes. Aggressive pursuit of specific females even in tanks with multiple rays. Some males "bounce" up and down rapidly, sometimes while biting the disc. When there is consistent aggression between M/F usually leads to breeding.
Just be careful, I've seen females who weren't willing to breed die due to over aggression from courting males. respected keeper Jim Barry lost a nice Male from a barb stab during breeding that punctured something vital, the female got defensive.

I clip the barbs on some females for this reason now

Thanks! Great info. I been noticing alot of head to head going on. One flaps front disc on other and vise versa. Sometimes they are so into it they don't even realize it's feeding time like they usually do lol. Just curious on others experiences.

Sounds like you're definitely on the right track. How long have they been together? How old are they?

I've heard of rays 2 and younger breeding. But in my experience they're usually 3+ when they start getting busy.
