Sorry I know these are not Piranha except they are a relative. I had to post. Two weekends ago then last weekend as well I saw both of my Black Belt Red Hooks mating with the male milting the eggs from the female in my 360 gallon tank. The tank is full of other fish and the fry probably won't make it to maturity. However, I'm enrolled in classes and if I can find the time to set up another tank I'm going to to see if I can raise some babies.:D:popcorn::D

Hi. Are these Red Hooks or Black Belts?

How did they spawn? A few years ago I spawned Red Hooks and they laid and fertilised about an inch down into the gravel, then 'shook' on the way back out so that the eggs stayed buried.

Mine did the same thing, depositing milt and eggs into the sand with their anal fins. About 1 to 2 inches deep in sand. My are Back Belts we sometimes call them Black Belt Red Hooks because they are similar.

The two times I have seen them mating it has been out in the open once in the morning around 10:00 am and the other at about 4:30 pm just out side of the main school of Red Hooks. They did not seem to have a problem breeding out in the open like most cichlids I have breed.

I apologize notes is the only documentation I can provide until I buy a digital camera or some kind of video recorder.

To clarify the species is Myleus schmburgki. As well, the tanks PH was acidic both times my pair were spawning, below 6.5 PH.

Howdy Arowana1,

Congrats.

I moved this thread for you. I am not sure why you posted it with piranhas, the "Other Characins" would be more appropriate, or even better the "Breeding" forum (which is where I am sending it right now)

I hope you get some good feedback here, best of luck with the spawning!

Red Hooks and other Pacus are related to Piranhas is why I posted in the Piranha section.

My Red Hooks spawned after I'd missed a water change. There were about 21(?) assorted dollars in the tank and the pH went down to 6. There was also a full moon. Two fish coloured up really intensely - especially the male - and all the males - mainly schomburgki and Red Hooks - grew extensions to their mid-anal rays and mid-dorsal rays. All this happened for about 2 weeks. Then two Red Hooks seperated from the shoal and spawned for a whole day. The next day they were back in the shoal and you couldnt tell which 2 it was.

Good luck with the fry if you try to raise them. I think the eggs might be light-sensitive.
