Hello

I have two blood parrot cichlids, I think they are male and female. The larger, female often lays eggs. She just laid a bunch of eggs on a rock, we knew it was coming for a bit, as she was quickly rearranging the tank. Typically, we remove the eggs, because from what I have read, they are infertile and just turn into fungus and spoil the tank.

This time while she was laying them, we noticed the smaller, assumed male, hovering over them, which we have never noticed before.

Is it possible he fertilized the eggs? And if so, what should we look for?

Thanks!

Likely So. When male cichlids hover over, they are spritzing them to make them fertile. You could try leaving them there. Any tank mates? Cichlids are great parents. The eggs will hatch, and you will see little clear fish darting around, and as they get older, they will grow, and you can sell them. Fry are also fed fry powder, so be ready :) GL!

I was under the impression most male blood parrots were infertile. That the female eggs could be fertilized by one of the origin species males

This is what I was under the impression as well, which is why I thought to ask.

Thanks for the help all!
