Hi I have a pair of blue rams in a 10 gallon hex and wanted to know what water conditions i would need to have them mate and what I would have to do

Thanks :D :D :D

[bump]

i'm interested as well.

they will need warmer water, like 80+, good water quality, lots of plants, and little if no tank mates helps too.
they need plants so they can hide and feel safe and have a place to lay eggs.

Ok fishmastermike,

I am also trying to breed GBR’s. I am on my 8th spawn now and nothing to show for it. A lot of people say there easy to breed, but I don’t agree. I do believe that a 10 gallon is way too small for a pair of rams. I house mine in a 30 gallon. Of course in my situation I bought 2 because they look amazing, well they ended up being a male and female. Some of my problem now is that I have then in with:

2 clown Loachs
1 Botia loach
1 rubber lip Pl*co
1 zebra danio
2 neon’s
2 Peppered Cory cats

They were able to keep the 2nd spawn alive long enough for 2 day old swimmers. It was awesome. As for the space they need, GBR’s do share the care of the fry but in some cases are just like regular family. Sometimes the female does not want the male around and vise versa. When that happens there should be some plants and structure for the other to flee to for a while. I change the water in the tank about 20% each Sunday, with cooler (not too cool) water. This simulates rain fall effect. Also you can feed them live blood or black worms. I have heard that. I have not feed mine that yet, only thawed out frozen blood worms and brine shrimp. They seem to be on clock work, because they always spawn on a Sunday or Saturday night. Weird I know. I am working on a 46 gallon bow front to give them more room. Then in the near future a 200 gallon for my loach tank. I will be using my 30 gallon as a fry hatchery and grow out. That is if I can get them to spawn on a small piece of driftwood or small rock. On an on I go… here is my thread on GBR’s check I out.

ive bred rams a few times before. and only once with something to show. well, blue german rams are one of the cichlids that actually like SOFT water. in the tank either have a flat rock or a substrate they can dig in. they breed like crazy once they paired. the parents do watch after the wigglers and they eat the ones that are sick or deformed. they do put them in their mouth to clean the wigglers off also. but the female will eat the wigglers eventually because they want to breed again. best thing to do is to take out the female and isolate it carefully. try not to make them get too disturbed they could make the wigglers scatter all over the tank and have to use alot of energy to get them all back in the spot.

first set the tank with a ph 5 to 6, temp high 80s like lets say 86, feed lots of frozen foods such as blood worms, myis shrimp and the like i feed 4 times a day small feedings though 2 frozen two flake i use a mix of ocean nutrition brine shrimp plus and omaga one cichlid flakes. the fishy will spawn on a flat rock use slate as it wont afect water cemistry. when free swiming I would feed green water for a week, then switch to live brine shrimp. whats the ph from your tap?
