Hey everyone ok well I just got a red tail payara 69 bucks for and since my scomb I had died young at 10 inches and only accepted live food. I thought feeding my new tat baby cichlids now would be more healthy. before everyone bites my head of I just want to say I want to feed my new tat as heathy as possible. Last year I bought my mother a 55 gallon ciclhid setup for my mother and these bercardi cichlids have been over breeding now I'm not sure the name is but they are brown with a forked tail. So do you guys think they would benefit my tat a lot more then rossy reds at this point he's about 6 inches.

The cichlids would be a great food source I think. The problem is breeding and raising them to a good size quickly enough to keep up with his appetite. Make sure to feed them very high quality food as well.

I have mine on sardine like cut fish I stuff with new life spectrum thera-A food. I started by just giving him the heads of the fish since they're very small and he recognized the eyes, etc as a fish. After a while I tried other parts of them which worked great, same color and smell as he was used to with the heads. He'll take live and killed whole fish also but he's lazy since being on the cut stuff. D'oh!

Not sure what your setup is like, but you could start breeding convicts to fill this need. Either several tanks with pairs, or one large divided tank. When they lay eggs, transfer the object that they laid the eggs on to a hatching/grow out 10gallon tank. It may take several breeding pairs, but it could work, or at least be a supplement to other feedings.

im not an expert but cichlids might not be the best choice. they have spiny dorsal fins that could cause damage or get stuck. yes i know they eat them in the wild no doubt however it is a possible risk to consider.
