I'm looking for input from the People who have experience with larger cichlids breeding in a larger community tank.
i have seen a lot of vids on here with large aggressive cichlids breeding in community tank but i realize that these tanks tend to be large like 500 plus.

I currently have a 300 gallon foot print is 84"L x 28"W x 32"H internal. I'm not sure if i would even try to let my midevils breed in there with the rest of the stock.
the reason why i'm asking it that i'm planning on building a larger tank something closer to 500, 550 with a foot print of 12'L x 30"w x 30"t, with a tank like that could i breed some larger cichlids a community setup? like i stated i currently have what could be a pair of midevil but i keep the female in a separate tank my 300 is mostly males i believe, and i love the way my carpintis looks in its mask and would like to see that more. currently in my tank a have some convicts and salvini's with males and females that have paired with no problems.

i think i may be asking for trouble and should keep my stock mostly male but at the same time if i can do it i would like to

I accidently had my midas breed with my xiloaensis in my 72"L x 18"W and it didnt go well the only fish that survived wwere the gt pair and a few smaller fish but any mid sized fish was killed in a 48 hour period.... I would suggest you do not breed any amphilophus in a community... I do have a gt pair in the community and they do well they have never killed anyone they just claim about 18" of the tank... You might get away with carpintis since they are better tempered than rd's/midas..... I would give it a shot if you want with carpintis just be prepared to remove the female if you have problems..

I have 8 managuense. I currently have fry with a pair. All my fish are fine because the other respect the space of the breeding pair. It can be done. They are all in a 180 gallon tank.
