If I have a 20g with ac50? (rated 30-50) and the cons breed, should I worry about the fry being sucked into the filter. Should I just invest in a sponge filter? Or can I put something over the intake that will help?

Thanks

Yes, you can put a sponge over the intake, the fry will not be sucked into it.

I have the same filter and the same size tank and my cons are breeding there and the fry are all fine. Generally the cons will be smart enough to lay their eggs far away from the filter.

Setup your cave for them to breed in on the opposite side of the tank of the filter.

You should be good.

The frys are pretty smart they don't get near the filters...I had some Con frys....Good times....

put something over the filter i lost 2 batches of fry in a 20 to a filter, now i have nylon stocking over it and they are fine.

when i had fry i went to a halloween store and got a foam nose like from a clown costum and it worked great

Check out the craft section at Wal*mart. You can get a nice size sheet of thick foam used for crafts and cut it up for filter media. Super cheap, gobs of surface area, and can service many smaller tanks. Add to you purchase one piece of PVC pipe and some PVC "T" fittings or 90 degree elbows and you've got lift tubes.

Get some free 1 gallon jars from the local pizza shop and you can make some flipping sweet fry growout jars that double as sponge filters for bigger tanks. See my post on this here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2246956&postcount=32

thanks for all the replies everyone. Ill probably just put a sponge over it. But viri do you have pics of these "growout jars"? I wanna see how it actually looks

Sorry, I don't have those anymore. I had a lot of square footage when I lived in Philly because I lived in an old store front that was converted to a house... upstairs was the living space (used to be the private offices to support the business) and the showroom downstairs was like a 1500 square foot fish room for me. Now my whole house in Raleigh is about the size of my old fish room in Philly. So the jars are gone. Most of the tanks are gone.

If I get to breeding cichlids again, I'll be sure to write a proper article with pictures of the methods that I use.

cut one of your 50 sponge filters at the top i just stuck a steak knife down in it and slid it over the intake lengthwise it also serves as a prefilter when it get gunky gravel vac it first before pulling it off so all your gunk doesnt inhabit the take once again deffinatly cover your intake for sure you will lose fry its happened i lost con fry in a much much larger tank once they are free swimming they will swim right into the intake
