Hey,

I'm relatively new to the fish hobby, just starting in the past year I have 2 tanks set up at the moment with a lack space in my small 2 bedroom apartment and the girlfriend has told me that I can't get anymore tanks until we move (They are always spoiling the fun) Anyways I'll get to the point.

It took me a little to set up the first tank which is a 20g where I bought 2 males convicts, well...... It turns out the LFS doesn't know how to sex their convits and they started breeding. They have had 2 batch of fry so far which they ate. I was thinking that I messed around with the tank to much and they got defensive. So the 2nd batch I put them into my 77g tank with a 12' Pleco and lots of cover and they failed to breed in the bigger tank. So last week I put them into the 20g again. Within 2 days they had already laid eggs on the side of the rocks.

Anyone with expirence with breeding convicts have any advice? I want to try to keep these fry alone, I've done alot of research and nothing seems to work. If it wasn't for this breeding pair I would be getting rid of cichlids all together such boring fish, keeping only 2 fish in the tank such a waste.

Anyways any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jordan:irked:

I had a male and a female in a 20g and they bred all by themselves and raised the babies. Well Until the mom killed the dad. I ended up with like 80 fry. All I did was leave them alone and fed them well and they did their thing.

Probably "messed" with them too much. As in taking pics, or showing your friends the tank so they can see the eggs or just plain staring at the tank. Females can be very crazy for lack of a better word. Mess around too much with the tank then they will just eat the eggs. Not going to risk spending weeks to just see them getting killed by a predator...you.

I suggest leaving them along till at least their free swimming. Obviously feed them and such, but they will care for the eggs and fry much beter than we can. Don't even have to feed the fry, they will eat the extra on the ground, algae, and whatever else they can found.
