breeding convicts

many many people have, they are highly regarded as the easiest fish to breed besides maybe guppies.

right now i have 4 convits, 2 of them females for sure, 1 questionably and 1 i'm pretty sure male, and i'm hoping i'll get a pair or two out of this.

once you get a pair, they take care of everything for ya and should breed like clockwork, giving you plenty of free feeders.

they will swim around the tank together and start to dig out a corner of the tank. you should see the female's colors get very bright. the red/orange in her body will show and the blue/green in her fins should show. you will notice that their aggression towards any other fish in that part of the tank will rise. expect them to breed and breed often. not all of the fry will survive and do not be alarmed if they eat the eggs/fry the first time as they get used to the idea of fry they will become great protectors. enjoy!

i think everyone has bought convicts not trying to make them breed and ended upwith millions down my LFS i asked if theyed wanted some for free and they refused!but good luck you should have some fry by the end of the week.

anyone breed convicts before? i wanna take a try at it

"just add water and fish" :)

heard that quote somewhere either online or in a book.

i also just bought 3 a few days ago and have a pair already; in hopes of breeding them to use as feeders for my midas.

My females orange spot is getting really bright but they don't swim around together much.T hey kind of chase each other around the tank. The male tends to stay in the corner and then the female will spot him and chase him out of the corner. they will play this little find and chase game a lot. but i don't know, I just got them a couple weeks ago, maybe I'm just not used to their behaviors yet. The female seems to be growing faster then the male, if that matters.

Its quite difficult to breed convicts...one of the the trickiest of cichlids to breed. First add a male and female to your tank. Secondly feed them and keep the water clean then presto, baby convicts 99% of the time. :D

I have had a female convict in my 180 for two months now...I added a male two weeks ago...Didn't do a thing...They chased each other around...Had babies in the tank on Saturday.

the male being smaller shouldnt be a problem, mine breed and the female is 1.5x its size. Usually if they start digging or cleaning a surface, thats a good chance they will breed soon.
